Penny is a 26 year old artist from the California Bay Area who got into music at a very young age. Watching his older brother is what he says got him into music early and he been making music for about 15 years, he also runs his own clothing line. Penny gets his inspiration from artists like Russ , Kendrick, 2 Pac & Eminem and also looks up to the artist Mac Dre from his area. He made his first song at his friends home studio then sold copies at school, now he has released 5 studio albums and sold over 5000 copies as an independent artist. He has also toured worldwide and is CEO of his own music group MSML – Music Saved My Life Music Group.
When asked if he would be interested in producing or playing instruments he says “I would be more interested in becoming an executive producer” he continues “I like to be part of the beat making process and i think i bring the best artists together.” Aside from music production he also is a video director and has been a vital part in many of his most recent videos. He has upcoming music with Blaq Tuxedo a Grammy nominated production group and has features from Jeff Turner and Sevin , a well-known gospel artist. Aside from those collaborations he is also working on songs with artists Turf talk and Young Gully.
Penny has his own clothing company that he when he made one for himself and everyone ended up wanting their own. He tells me “When i made shirts for myself and people started wanting their own I didn’t know what was happening at first but later it all made sense.” He continues: “At that point i knew it would take off.”
Usually when an independent artist is able to get things done on their own they brag about it or see it as a major accomplishment. Penny is a very successful independent artist but he doesn’t really see it as success, he sees it as his job. “That’s what an independent artist is supposed to do, they create art that the fans want and they find ways to continue to keep giving the fans what they want.”
He looks up to the artists Mozzy & Lil Darrion from his area and thinks like many others in the music world today that Kendrick is one of the best rappers out right now. He believes the production on his newest project is what makes him stand out from other artists.
When it comes to his future in music Penny says “I am striving establish my label, Music Saved My Life Music Group, I also look forward to signing artists, and having my clothing line established.” He continues “I look forward to working with big artists and I look to progress not only as an artist but as a man as well.”
When it comes to signing a deal he’s not really looking to he is looking to build his own label and sign his own artists. Being that he is a successful independent artist I wanted to get a bit of advice for young artists thinking of signing a deal or staying independent. He stresses: “If you can get a good deal for one album and they can provide a platform and budget then you should.” He continues “a lot of people now are signing 4-5 album deals but in my opinion in that situation you’re better off staying independent.
His song “The Weekend” is out now via Youtube. He also has a new project titled Millennial dropping in Spring 2018 with a potential national tour. Penny looks to release 4-5 singles within six months leading up to the project. Penny is a very down to earth artist and makes music with a message. His overall goal in music is to use his music to bring different people from different walks of life to unify and celebrate one universal message. Penny has been going hard for a number of years now, his hard work is most definitely paying off.
